Strontium is a reactive metal purified from celestite ore, requiring advanced technology and a carefully controlled production process. Strontium can not be used as a structural metal on its own. Rather, it is used as a reagent or modifier in industrial applications.
Close control of the cast structure is a major requirement to produce high quality aluminum alloy products. The most effective way to provide a fine and uniform as-cast grain structure is to add nucleating agents to the melt to control crystal formation during solidification.
Strontium modified castings exhibit many advantages, including improved ductility, more uniform porosity, impact strength as well as improved machinability and electrical and thermal conductivity. Strontium has also been shown to distribute micro-shrinkage during solidification, thereby increasing cast soundness. As a result, strontium modified castings have expanded into a wide range of industries, including the automotive industry where manifolds, engine blocks, wheels and cylinder heads are manufactured from strontium modified aluminum castings. | |
